Anemone canadensis (Canada Anemone) - photos and description
Origin: Native.
General: Rhizomatous plants usually found in large colonies. Stems pubescent.
Flowers: Flowers are white, borne singly on long peduncles, have a slight fragrance. Flowers measured to 15 mm diameter.
Leaves: Basal leaves have long petioles, usually having 5 lobes, basal leaf measured to 12.5 cm in diameter. Stem leaves sessile, located in a whorl underneath the flowering stem, deeply lobed, stem leaf measured at 10.5 cm diameter. Leaves pubescent.
Height: Height listed in Budd's Flora to 30 cm, we measured plants to 50 cm tall.
Habitat: Moist grasslands and wood thickets.
Abundance: Very common.
When and where photographed: Took the above photos June 2nd, prairie roadside about 70 km southeast of Regina, SK, and June 9th, edge of wooded ravine, slopes of the Qu'Appelle River valley, about 40 km north of our home in Regina, SK.
