Diervilla lonicera (Bush Honeysuckle) - photos and description
Origin: Native.
General: A low shrub found in our boreal forest. Older stems greyish in colour. Stems glabrous.
Flowers: Flowers appear 1 to 5 in clusters at stem tips and from leaf axils, one flower only per flower stalk. Flowers are tubular, pale yellow, and measured to 13 mm long.
Leaves: Leaves are oval to ovate, opposite, ciliate, finely toothed, and have short petioles. Leaf bottom and top with a few hairs on the central nerve. Leaf highlighted in photo above was 11.5 cm long and 5.5 cm wide.
Height: Height listed in Budd's Flora to 100 cm we measured plants to 87 cm tall.
Habitat: Rocky thickets in the boreal forest.
Abundance: Rare, ranked as an S3 (as of 2021) by the Saskatchewan Conservation Data Centre.
When and where photographed: Photos taken July 27th, wet woods, boreal forest in east central Saskatchewan, about 400 km north east of our home in Regina, SK.
