Echinacea angustifolia (Purple Coneflower) - photos and description

 

 

 

 

 

Spent stems and seed heads from previous year, photo taken May 16th.

Origin: Native.

General: Perennial plants with stiff stems and rough-hairy foliage.

Flowers: Flower heads are solitary at the end of stems. The flowers are large and showy, with pink reflexed petals, and an orange-red conic central disk. Flower heads measured to 5.5 cm diameter.

Leaves: This plant has both basal and stem leaves. Its leaves are lanceolate and 3-nerved. Stem leaves are alternate, reduced in size upwards. We measured a stem leaf at 13 cm long, 17 mm wide.

Height: Height listed in Budd's Flora to 60 cm, we measured plants to 45 cm tall.

Habitat: Grassland and prairie hillsides in southeast Saskatchewan.

Abundance: Rare, ranked as an S3 (as of 2021) by the Saskatchewan Conservation Data Centre.

When and where photographed: Photos taken May 16th,  June 19th, and July 21st in southeastern Saskatchewan.
