Gentianella amarella (Northern Gentian) - photos and description

Origin: Native.

General: Annual plants with an upright, narrow growth habit. Plants glabrous.

Flowers: Numerous tubular flowers from upper leaf axils. Flower colour varies from purple to greenish-white. Flower size 1 cm in length and 7 mm diameter.

Leaves: Leaves are opposite, oblanceolate, acute tipped, and sessile. We measured a leaf at 4 cm long and 17 mm wide.

Height: Height listed in Budd's Flora to 50 cm, the plants in the top photo were 60 cm tall.

Habitat: Moist prairie, edges of woods, roadside ditches.

Abundance: Common.

Synonym: Listed in some of the field guides we use as Gentiana amarella.

When and where photographed: Took the above photos on July 30th and August 6th, edges of aspen woods, 20 km east of our home in Regina, SK.
