Monotropa uniflora (Indian-Pipe) - photos and description

 

 

 

 

Origin: Native.

General: Saprophytic perennial plants with snow white foliage, plants lack chlorophyll. Foliage and flowers turn black when spent. Plants glabrous.

Flowers: Flowers solitary, nodding when new, then straighten to vertical when in fruit. Flowers measured at 2 cm long.

Leaves: Leaves are translucent scales, alternate, ovate.

Height: Height listed in Budd's Flora to 30 cm, we measured plants to 15 cm tall.

Habitat: Shady moist woods.

Abundance: Uncommon.

When and where photographed: Photos taken July 28th, moist mixed woods, Duck Mountain Provincial Park, 300 km north east of our home in Regina, SK.
