Prunus pensylvanica (Pin Cherry) - photos and description
Inflorescence grows in umbels.
General: A shrub or small tree with spreading branches.
Flowers: Grow in small umbels, usually 4 flowers per umbel, flowers white, flowers have a slight fragrance. We measured a flower at 15 mm diameter.
Leaves: Leaves are alternate, oval and have small rounded teeth. Leaf highlighted in photo above was measured at 42 mm long by 22 mm wide.
Height: Height listed in Budd's Flora to 8 m. We measured plants to 2.5 m tall.
Habitat: Bluffs, ravines, and hillsides.
Abundance: Ranked as common (S5) by the Saskatchewan Conservation Data Centre.
Origin: Native.
Similar species: Might be mistaken for Prunus virginiana (Choke Cherry), however that shrub's flowers grow in long racemes, not in small umbels.
When and where photographed: Took the above photos May 21 and May 22, plants nearly finished flowering, shrubby thickets, Qu'Appelle Valley, Buffalo Pound Provincial Park, about 70 km west of our home in Regina, SK.
