Salicornia rubra (Red Samphire) - photos and description

Origin: Native.

General: Low annual with fleshy, round stems, branching growth habit. Plants glabrous. Plants turn bright red in late summer, a large patch of these plants from a distance appear to give the soil a carpet of red.

Flowers: Flowers are inconspicuous.

Leaves: Opposite, small, scale-like.

Height: Height listed in Flora of Alberta to 25 cm, we've measured plants to 8 cm tall.

Habitat: Saline flats and lakeshores in southern Saskatchewan.

Abundance: Common.

When and where photographed: Photos were taken on August 3rd in a saline lake bed, north of Webb, about 300 km west of our home in Regina, SK.
