Viburnum opulus var. americanum (High Bush-Cranberry) - photos and description
Outer flowers large, sterile.
Inner flowers small, fertile.
General: Upright shrubs with dense foliage and with greyish bark.
Flowers: Flowers in umbels, we measured an umbel to 8.5 cm diameter. There is a ring of larger, showy, infertile flowers on the outside, and an inner cluster of smaller, fertile flowers. We measured an outer flower at 20 mm diameter, and an inner flower at 4 mm diameter.
Leaves: Leaves opposite, the leaves with 3 spreading lobes and irregular teeth. Leaves sparingly hairy on top and hairier with longer hairs on the bottom. We measured a leaf at 9.5 cm long by 8 cm wide.
Height: Height listed in Budd's Flora to 4 m, we measured plants to 2.2 m tall.
Habitat: Heavy woods in the parklands and boreal forest.
Abundance: Common.
Origin: Native.
When and where photographed: The above photos were taken June 11th forest roadside, Porcupine Provincial Forest, about 450 km north east of Regina, SK, and a forest roadside Duck Mountain provincial park about 300 km northeast of our home in Regina, SK.
